From university, initially as an art student, through working in - and the use of - a sophisticated pre-digital map-lab in graduate school, through decades of working with scientific graphical communications primarily using autocad and geology-specific digital graphics tools as a geologist, to many years of experience building creative projects, a capability of aesthetic excellence, clever communication, and, where appropriate, understanding and respect for data and the scientific rules for its presentation are brought to every project.

Favored current illustration tools include Adobe lightroom, photoshop, illustrator, XD, indesign, and dimension, Photomatix pro, Corel painter, Autodesk maya, blender, and Pixologic zbrush. Examples of various styles of illustration are shown throughout this site. These include pen and ink drawing, digital water-color with painter, vector drawing with illustrator, and photo manipulation, segregation, compositing, enhancement, and optimization with lightroom, photoshop, photomatix pro and painter, and 3d modeling and composition with maya, blender and zbrush.

design

Always striving toward a beautiful, unique, creative and illustration and typography-heavy style, modern coding methods involving css-grid, flexbox, z-index, svg, page-width dependent and variable-font typography are used in conjunction with time-tested rules for grid layouts, typography and graphic elements to produce digital web-based compositions that bow toward and respect both the graphic design of well-done magazines in the pre-digital era and the aesthetic grace and clarity of well-designed data presentation. Also, as low-code and no-code tools become more and more prominent those are used to reduce the time involved in development and uniqueness can be achieved through content.

Favored current design tools include those mentioned under the heading "illustration" on this page as well as somewhat unconventional css techniques.
