on the road again

a digital journeyman

I’m Jim Owens. I make interactive stuff with all of the adobe cc products in conjunction with writing, photography, video, and html, css, and js, and most recently, python. Raised in Chicago I have lived in the intermountain west for most of my life after studying at Syracuse University (undergrad) and the University of Rhode Island (grad). I am most commonly found in Park City (Utah) and southern Nevada. I work on the road as a bit of a nomad occasionally, living very simply and very digitally, also studying Spanish when and where possible. My favorite spots outside of the USA are France, Spain and Mexico. I am also a licensed professional geologist and this is useful when working on natural-resources and environmental projects.

My blog contains entries on where I have been, may be going, and what I have been or will be up to. I’ll try to avoid politics. The subjects covered will include the digital world, the nomadic workstyle, learning a second language, art, design, travel, and discussion of various personal photography, video and otherwise-digital projects. I am, by no means, an expert on AI, but I am finding myself more and more involved in using it.

The photography galleries are organized by place and, beyond that, are pretty disorganized. Clicking on any of the 186 main gallery images, at the time of this writing, will open a page containing around 250 additional images. The number of main gallery images will continue to grow as the number of total images grows.

The photographs include those taken over the course of around thirty years, ranging widely in quality from fairly crude older phone-camera shots through DSLR digital, scanned 35mm-slides, and very high-quality scans of 4×5-transparencies. Many have been published here and there over the years. Most galleries contain images taken over several trips. This is an ongoing labor of love, with new images added frequently. These include the products of new trips, stuff found while rifling through old portable hard-drives and photo-cards, and the scanning of lots of 35mm-slides and 4×5-transparencies.

The illustration and design gallery is not comprehensive at all. It is intended to expain my approach. Examples of different styles of illustration can be found there and more importantly here and there throughout the site. The video gallery contains a few video projects. It should also be growing.

I intend for the site to be a bit of a laboratory of everything that I am playing around with, including both content and code. So please enjoy and forgive the fact that the site will be under perpetual construction and tad dishevelled. All rights are reserved © Jim Owens 2024.
